I’m so excited to share a creative project I have been working on in collaboration with illustrator, Yukiko Noritake, called Paris Cafés from A to Z. It’s an illustration themed guidebook to cafés in Paris for every letter of the alphabet.
The pass time of Parisians taking breaks to caffeinate and socialize remains the same today as it did 100s of years ago, however the concept of “new wave”, specialty coffee shops is a newly emerging trend. This book doesn’t aim to give the history of specialty cafés in Paris, other books such as Paris Coffee Revolution have done a great job of covering this aspect. Instead, this book puts an artistic spin on cafés and gives an insiders glimpse into the variety of specialty coffee shops in Paris.
What was originally an illustration homework assignment for Yukiko, who is currently perfecting her trade in illustration at the École de Condé in Paris, has evolved. She was originally asked to design a typographic alphabet with the theme of her choice. She chose to focus on cafés in Paris, due to her love of coffee, and wanting to explore the wide variety of places available in Paris. She asked me if I would like to collaborate with her to curate a list of cafés in Paris for every letter of the alphabet and to write the accompanying text, and I gladly accepted.
That is pretty much how the project came to be in a nutshell. After months of hard work, we have successfully created a tangible guidebook that showcases a diverse list of cafés in Paris that caters to all types of coffee lovers. Paris Cafés from A to Z includes an illustration of each café featured, with information on the unique features of each, the vibes, and we even threw in a few fund tidbits.
