The infamous English language bookshop, Shakespeare and Company is known for being a literary haven for anglophone writers and readers in Paris. As a part of their summer series of events they host outdoor readings by different authors such as Lydia Davis, Claudia Rankine, Leslie Jamison… Yesterday they hosted a joint reading with Zadie Smith and Nick Laird in collaboration with the NYU Creative Writing Program.
It was a very special evening to hear some of Nick Laird’s poetry for the first time, and to hear Zadie Smith reading from her new novel, SWINGTIME that has yet to be released. Following the reading there was an interesting Q&A that gave us a glimpse into the lives of the two writers. They spoke candidly about their experiences as literary couple, and how they inspire and support each other’s work whole-heartedly. They also touched on how both of their writing is talked about how their work is very much inspired by place, and that the energy of living in NY is a city that provides them with great inspiration and anxiety at the same time. At the end of event the bookshop was open to purchase their books, and they both stuck around to sign books and take pictures.
Here are a few photos from the event. There is also a Podcast on Shakespeare and Company’s site that you can access here, and you can also check out their site for other upcoming readings this summer.
